Evans Funeral Home of Jefferson announces the death of Mr. James Brandon “Beefy” Smith, age 52, of Pendergrass, who passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2024. Mr. Smith was born in Langdale, Alabama, a son to Mrs. Brenda Layfield Smith of Pendergrass and the late James Carl Smith Jr. Mr. Smith was a 1990 graduate from Opelika High School, enjoyed playing football for the Bulldogs, and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Georgia in 2000. Brandon was a Project Manager for Super Shops and a fan of Auburn University athletics. In addition to his father, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Perry and Laura Layfield and his paternal grandparents, Carl and Kate Smith.
Survivors include his son, Zachary James “Zach” Smith of Loganville; mother, Brenda Layfield Smith of Pendergrass; brother, Justin Smith of Braselton; stepmother, Becky Vinsant of Opelika, AL; uncle, Perry Layfield of Pendergrass and nephew, William Smith and hundreds of friends in the automotive racing community.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2024 from 3:00 -5:00 PM at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home, 1801 Frederick Road, Opelika, AL 36801.
Brandon leaves an everlasting legacy in NHRA and NMCA, which was inspired by his grandfather and father. He also loved to race and show his 1970 440 six pack Dodge Challenger throughout his life.
