Mr. Jay Cates

Evans Funeral Home of Jefferson announces the death of Mr. Jewell Henry “Jay” Cates, Jr., age 53 of Jefferson, Georgia who entered rest Sunday, February 11, 2024.  Mr. Cates was born in Lawrenceville, Georgia a son of the late Elizabeth “Molly” Feather Cates and Jewell Henry Cates, Sr. of Hoschton.  Mr. Cates was a truck driver with Penske Freight Lines.

Survivors in addition to his father include his wife, Amy Jo Crane Cates of Jefferson.  Children, Justin Cates (Courtney) of Commerce, Kati Maxwell of Jefferson, Philip Maxwell of Jefferson, Joshua Cates (Abby) of Danielsville, Kaylee Cates of Jefferson.  Siblings, David Bailey (Kathy) of Winterville, Penny Johnson (Tony) of Royston, Jewellene Shumake of Snellville, Lee Cates (Tonya) of Jersey and Charlie Holcombe (Michael) of Hoschton.  Three grandchildren, Caitlin, Joshua and Kayson Cates and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Thursday, February 15, 2024 from the Chapel of Evans Funeral Home with Pastor Storey Tate officiating with burial to follow in  Evans Memory Gardens.  Gentlemen honored as pallbearers are Philip Maxwell, Justin Cates, Josh Cates, Paul Tate, Cody Roberts and Daniel Moon. The family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 14, 2024 at Evans Funeral Home.
