Mrs. Helen (McConnell) Gunnels

Evans Funeral Home of Jefferson announces the death of Mrs. Helen McConnell Gunnels, age 81, of Jefferson, Georgia who entered rest Thursday, June 4, 2026. Mrs. Gunnels was born on November 20, 1944 in Anderson, South Carolina the daughter of the late Frederick McSwain McConnell and the late Vivian Hamilton McConnell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Kirkland Gunnels and a son, John Austin Gunnels.

Mrs. Gunnels retired from the Jackson County Probate Judge’s Office. Helen was a member of Jefferson First Baptist Church, Tumbling Waters Society, Jefferson Women’s Club, Jackson County 4-H and numerous bridge clubs. Mrs. Gunnels worked with local food banks in Jackson County to meet the needs of her local community.

Survivors include her sons, Thomas Kirkland “Tommy” Gunnels of Jefferson, GA and Crawford McSwain “Mac” Gunnels and his wife, Dawn Gunnels, of Wake Forest, North Carolina. Two grandchildren Brantley McSwain Gunnels and Vivian Caroline Gunnels Pittard and her husband, Jordan Pittard.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 10, 2026 from the Chapel of Evans Funeral Home with Mr. Mac Gunnels officiating with burial to follow in Evans Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. prior to the service at Evans Funeral Home.
