Mrs. Sarah E. (Sullivan) Russell

Mrs. Sarah E. (Sullivan) Russell, age 81, of Murphysboro, Il passed away peacefully on January 19, 2024, after a long and courageous battle with dementia. She was surrounded by her loved ones in Jefferson, Georgia, at the time of her passing. 

Sarah was born February 22, 1942, inCharleston, Illinois to Carl and Lorena(Rogers) Sullivan. She grew up in Cape Girardeau before moving to Murphysboro. After graduating from MTHS in 1960, she married Louis R. Russell of Murphysboro. They had two children Brian (Carolyn) Russell of Garland, TX and Amy (Johnny) Reeves of Gainesville, GA. She was also blessed with a stepson Louis R (Karen) Russell of Columbus, IN.

Sarah worked for Martin Oil Company before starting a family and then went to work for the Jackson County 4-H Extension Office. After seven years as a secretary, she went back to college and earned her bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University of Carbondale. She was employed as an Accountant in the Dean’s Office at the College of Technical Careers at SIUC where she retired in 2000. 

Sarah had been a member of the American Legion Auxiliary from 1962-2014. She was passionate about nature and animals, especially her beloved dogs and cats. She loved her family with her whole heart and always welcomed everyone into her home. 

She is survived by her children and grandchildren, Alex Reeves of Gainesville GA, Ethan and Jacob Russell of Garland TX, Regan (Josh) Littrell of Columbus IN, one brother, John L. Sullivan of Salina KS, and 6 great grandchildren of Columbus IN.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Ruby (Sullivan) Evans, two brothers, Leon Sullivan and Clifford Sullivan, and one grandson, Andy Russell.

A memorial service will be held in Murphysboro IL at Elm St. Baptist Church on June 1, 2024, at 11:00. Visitation will begin at 10:00. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Doniphan MO on June 2, 2024.
